Indian (Common) Mynas are considered one of the world’s most invasive species and a threat to our native wildlife. Until recently, these birds were rarely seen in the Weddin Shire; however, large flocks are now being reported across our district.

Weddin Landcare has taken the initiative to encourage the control of these birds before the population is beyond control. With assistance from Weddin Shire Council, we will be  implementing an educational campaign across the Weddin Shire to raise awareness of this pest bird and how community members can help to deter Indian Mynas or reduce their numbers. To learn more about why Indian Mynas are a problem and what you can do to help, read our fact sheet on Indian Mynas.

Significant localised reductions in Indian Myna numbers can be achieved by intensive community volunteer trapping programs so Weddin Landcare has recently acquired six peegee traps at a subsidised price from the Dubbo Indian Myna Control Program, run by the Dubbo Environment Group. These traps are now available for local members willing to participate in a coordinated trapping program and can be purchased for the low cost of $60. To purchase a trap or to find out more about them, please contact us.

Members who purchase a trap will contribute to the control of the birds and report numbers to inform further control programs and monitor the success of the program.Â
