We had a great day out at Monteagle with Dr Aurelie Quade learning all things soil health on Wednesday 20 May 2026.

The morning was spent understanding the core components of good soil.

We then headed out into the field to compare soil from paddocks that had been managed differently. We assessed a paddock that has been lightly grazed for over a decade vs a very productive paddock that has turned good cropping results in recent years.

There were a lot of questions and the afternoon involved participants sharing insights on their own soil and leaving with clear actions to improve soil health and/or profitability.

One of many great quotes from the day was “Instead of worrying about when it’s going to rain, worry about how your soil is going to catch the rain and hold it when it falls. This is what you can control.”

Soil really is our biggest asset.

A big thanks to property owner, Tim Fowler for hosting us and giving us a great background on the property and the methods used on the different paddocks. Thanks to Bulla Creek Brewing Co. for the amazing space and hospitality. Thanks to Unwind in Grenfell for catering. Those lamb and gravy pies were perfect after being out in the crisp air!

A final thanks to Dr Aurelie Quade from Soil Resilience for travelling down from Mudgee to share your enthusiasm, knowledge and experience with us!

This field day was supported by the Australian Government through funding from the Climate-Smart Agriculture Program under the Natural Heritage Trust.
